A Guide to Foods That Are Bad For Your Braces

Wearing braces is a rough and painful experience. As much as wearing braces is good for your teeth, it can be quite a nuisance as well.  They require you to change your brushing and flossing habits, and you also have to change your diet not to ruin the braces. Changing your diet is absolutely the worst part of braces.

Just imagine not being able to eat your favorite foods for years. Even though it is not advisable, people who have weaker willpower give in to their cravings and eat foods that can cause damage to their braces. This leads to additional expenses and added pain. Here are some foods that you should avoid at all costs while wearing braces.

Hard Foods

Eating hard foods is the easiest way to damage your braces. Biting into something hard with force can easily crack or dislodge a bracket, bend a wire, or chip and even crack a tooth.

Hard foods like popcorn are a big no-no. They are hard, crunchy, and get stuck in your teeth, all those things that can damage your braces. Not just that, but having popcorn wedged between your braces can lead to swelling, discomfort, and even infection.

Ice

Chewing on ice is also discouraged for people with braces. Ice isn’t only discouraged because it’s hard to bite into but also because it affects sensitive teeth and gums.

Chewy Foods

Food that requires a lot of chewing and gnawing to break down is not advisable for people with braces as it can easily loosen the wires and brackets of the braces. Chewy foods such as meat can also get stuck in your food traps, as well as your brace's wires making it extremely difficult to clean and remove them. Some of these foods may seem soft enough for you to eat, but they cause more harm than good, extending your duration of wearing braces.

Sticky Food

Sticky foods are bad for people who wear braces. They can pull brackets and ligatures loose, bend or break wires, and can easily get caught in braces making it extremely hard for you to clean it out. Foods like candy, caramel, toffee, and gum should be avoided at all costs.

People wearing braces have a great responsibility on themselves to protect their braces at all times. Even the slightest lapse of concentration and you can be in a tough spot with your braces. If you have accidentally eaten something that you shouldn’t have, going to the dentist should be your number one priority.
