3 Tips for a Thorough Denture Cleaning

If you use dentures because you lost your natural teeth due to an accident, old age or illness, you know how much easier they’ve made your life.
Dentures can give you the confidence to flash a charming smile.
The use of dentures has become quite common now. According to a recent report, 41.23 million Americans used dentures in 2019.
But as useful as they are, if you don’t care for them properly, they can lose their natural shine and wear down.
So, if you’re trying to figure out how to take care of your dentures, here are three tips you should keep in mind:
Handle them gently

Be extra careful with them. If you’ve removed your dentures for washing, make sure you handle them with care. Place them over a folded towel or put them in a bowl of water.
Don’t wash them on a bare surface. This will reduce the chances of abrasion.
If you remove them before bed, make sure that you place them where they won’t get knocked down. It’s best to soak them overnight because most dentures need to stay moist to maintain their shape.
Clean them daily
Like natural teeth, you should clean your dentures daily—just not with toothpaste.
Toothpaste can cause microscopic abrasions in dentures.
Use a specialized denture cleaner to brush your dentures. Don’t use a hard-bristled brush; instead use a soft-bristled brush that will clean them thoroughly and remove all build-up scratch-free.
It’s also necessary to rinse your dentures with water or a denture cleaner after every meal. You should also clean your mouth after removing your dentures.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste to clean your natural teeth and your tongue. It’s a good idea to clean your palate with the same brush too.
Avoid cleaning your dentures with hot water as it can warp them completely.

See your dentist for professional cleaning when required
Nicely fitted dentures can last up to 7 years. But they need maintenance and professional care to last that long.
Your dentist will tell you how frequently you need to visit them to get your dentures cleaned. If you feel that your dentures don’t fit properly or have caused sores and irritation in your mouth, contact your dentist immediately.
Don’t use over the counter fix-it-yourself kits. These can often permanently damage your dentures.
