A Dentist with a Sweet Tooth? A Tooth-Friendly Halloween Candy Guide

Contrary to popular belief, dentists do not hate candy. In fact, sometimes, we even indulge ourselves in a caramel-y piece or two. (Hey, no one can say no to a box of Quality Street!)
However, when it comes to Halloween, we don’t let our sweet tooth get the better of us. Instead, we try to find alternate candy options that not only satisfy our sweet tooth but also keep our pearly whites healthy as well.
Here, we present a list of such options which you can add to your Halloween candy grocery list as well!
Note: No, they are not candy corn or milk duds!

Which Candy Should You Have This Halloween?

Dark Chocolate

Yes, some dentists may ask you to skip the chocolate altogether, but we’re not as cruel. Instead buy dark chocolate, preferably unsweetened or mildly sweetened, in lieu of those sugary milk chocolate bars.
Not only is dark chocolate a better option for your body, it’s also easy to wash away, less destructive than sticky candy, and has a flavonoid known as epicatechin, which slows down tooth decay. And if that’s not enough, dark chocolate also has polyphenols, which limit bad breath.

 Nutty Granola Bars
Candy bars with nuts are a much better alternative than regular bars. Because of their rocky consistency, these bars are able to break through that sticky consistency of the snack. They also leave less sugar in your mouth and are generally a healthier option because of the nuts.

Sugar-free Gum with Xylitol

There are plenty of sugar-free gums out there, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one. However, when you do see an option, try to go with a gum that also has xylitol. This common sweetener stimulates the production of saliva in your mouth, which naturally cleans out your teeth of leftover sugar.
