What to Expect After Getting Dental Implants: A Comprehensive Guide

The internet is abuzz with stories about people getting implants, the mysteries behind this process, and the recovery period. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, more than 3 million Americans have gotten implants, and this figure rises by 50,000 each year. But those who've had the procedure done know that dental implants are nothing like how they are portrayed on the internet.

Undoubtedly, the experience and skill of the dental clinic and the dentists play a pivotal role in this, but for most patients, the speed at which they recover is the most astonishing part. At Advanced Dental Center, our team of cosmetic dentistry professionals has been fitting dental implants for many years now. Let's share all the things you can experience after a surgery: immediately after and in the following weeks.

After 24 Hours

After the first few hours, you might feel a little exhausted because of the anesthesia that eventually wears off. It's advisable not to drive back under the influence. You might experience some blood coming out from the operated area but don't worry, as that's entirely natural and will subside in 2 hours. For the first 24 to 48 hours, you should avoid having hot, chewy, and hard foods. Instead, have soft, cold, or tepid food and drinks. Once the anesthesia wears off, you might experience a little discomfort, but it's nothing some prescribed painkillers by your dentist cannot fix.

After One to Three Days

After the initial 24 hours are up, you might experience some facial swelling and bruising, which is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. It's a sign of healing. You can use a cold compress on the outside of the mouth and an antiseptic gel on, around, and near the operated area, and this will help the swelling go down considerably. While you can take hot foods and drinks after 24 hours, our dentists from Advanced Dental Center would still advise you to consume soft, cold, or tepid food and beverages. You can start brushing your teeth after the first 24 hours.

After Three to Seven Days

Into the 3rd day and onward, you'll notice that the swelling has gone down considerably. While you can go about with your day-to-day activities, strenuous exercises, stooping, and bending, are still to be avoided. You can now start eating foods with some texture, such as well-cooked vegetables and soft fruits.

One to Two Weeks After Dental Implants
You can start eating like before the dental implants. You can go ahead with exercising regularly again, but heavy cardio is still to be avoided.

After Fourteen Days

It would help if you were back to your everyday life again. Our cosmetic dentistry professionals from Advanced Dental Center would advise you to visit your dentist three to four weeks after the surgery to make sure everything is okay. Four to six months later, your dentist will call you again for a prosthetic crown and final abutment fitting.
