Straighter Teeth Without Metal Braces—What Are My Options?

Misaligned teeth are a major concern for a significant part of the population. Around 28% of people are concerned about the appearance of their teeth, misalignment being one of the leading concerns.

The traditional treatment for misaligned teeth is metal braces. Parents have metal braces fitted for their children once their permanent teeth come in and they aren’t straight. As we get older, metal braces are no longer a viable option. They often affect confidence and self-esteem levels in teenagers and adults.

Here are some alternative treatments to straighten teeth:

Ceramic braces

The issue with traditional metal braces is that they are very obvious which is why adults shy away from them. Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces, but instead of plastic brackets, clear or tooth-colored ones are used. These braces, therefore, are discreet in comparison and blend in.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces work in quite a similar way to traditional metal braces. The only difference is that instead of being placed in front of the tooth, these are placed behind the teeth so that they aren’t visible.

You have to be eligible for lingual aligners. They aren’t right for everybody. Those with overbites won’t be able to achieve the desired results with this treatment.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are braces that are invisible. Instead of using wire and plastic brackets, clear trays are created for your teeth. They are easy to put in and take out. The longer you wear them, the quicker your teeth will get aligned.

These aligners have to be removed while eating food, as opposed to traditional braces that are a 24/7 treatment. Clear aligners work quickly and every few weeks a new set of trays have to be prepared for the patient’s teeth.

It’s important to highlight the fact that clear aligners are only applicable to those with mild misalignment issues. A severe overbite or crooked teeth cannot be fixed with clear aligners.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are a great treatment option, used for a number of dental concerns. Adults who don’t want to go through the weeks of treatment with other kinds of braces opt for this solution.

Your natural tooth is slightly shaved off so that the porcelain shell can be attached to your teeth and fixed in place. Dental veneers can be used on one, multiple, or all your teeth. It is an expensive process however and can take a few dentists appointments to get right.
